Why choose a raised bed?
Raised beds are popular on allotments and in private gardens. They make growing flowers, fruit and vegetables simpler, and they make gardening more manageable for people who find kneeling or bending difficult.
Easier on the back and knees
Working at a higher level means less bending and kneeling. This helps older gardeners, and anyone who finds getting down to the ground difficult, to keep enjoying their garden. Beds can be built higher, with a wide timber edge to sit on while you work.
Better growing on allotments
Raised beds are filled with loose soil and compost, which drains well and warms up earlier in spring. Crops such as salad, beetroot, carrots and herbs do well in them.
A plot that is easier to manage
Splitting a plot into smaller beds means you can reach the middle from the path without standing on the soil. Weeding and watering take less time.
Suits any garden
Raised beds can be built on heavy clay, stony ground or a hard surface, and fit neatly along a fence or path in a smaller garden.
Room to get around
Paths between beds can be laid out wide enough for a wheelchair, walking frame or wheelbarrow.
Easy to protect crops
It is simple to fix hoops, netting or fleece to a timber frame to protect plants from birds and frost.
